The Best Things To Do In San Francisco

Updated: May 11, 2021

San Francisco is a mixing pot of culture, cuisine, and the home of Toasty-- the first ever avocado toast bar! If you’re looking for what to do in San Francisco, we have a few recommendations that people of every age will enjoy. You can visit all of these exciting and picturesque places in half a day, all you need is a bicycle. Let’s get our mini-tour started!

START TIME : 8:00 A.M.

Fisherman’s Wharf

As one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist locations, Fisherman’s Wharf holds numerous attractions, such as Ghirardelli Square, Pier 39, Madame Tussauds, Aquarium of the Bay, and Boudin Bakery. Boudin Bakery is famous for its delicious sourdough bread; we also use sourdough bread to make our yummy avocado toast at Toasty! Its setting along the city’s waterfront makes it the perfect place for a photo-op. You can even find California’s world-famous sea lions lounging on the docks and splashing around in the ocean water. Take a stroll along the wharf, try some sourdough bread, nibble on gourmet chocolate, and check out those souvenir shops!

Expect to spend 1-2 hours here.

Rent a bike for two hours, half a day, or even longer, from one of the many rental businesses here, like City Bikes Rentals. Click here for more information.

Grab a Bite at Toasty

Replenish your body with something yummy and healthy. At Toasty, San Francisco’s only avocado toast bar, you can find a treat that satisfies your hunger after exploring the city. Having trouble selecting just one delicious toast? We’re always here to help! For a protein fix, try the Eggy Toasty-- sourdough bread topped with a smashed avocado, two poached eggs, salt, pepper, paprika, and micro greens. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, the Breckie Toasty is sure to fulfill your craving; it’s topped with your choice of nutella, peanut butter, or almond butter, along with fresh strawberries, bananas, and coconut flakes.

If you plan to order in person, make sure to stop by before 2 p.m. (which is when Toasty closes!). You can always opt to pre-order on UberEats.

Expect to spend less than 1 hour here.

The Golden Gate Bridge

Speaking of California’s famous orange arches, the Golden Gate Bridge attracts over ten million visitors to San Francisco every year. Fun fact: the one-mile-wide strait is actually the most photographed bridge on Earth! Every kind of traveler is attracted to the Golden Gate Bridge’s staggering towers and sweeping cables. For future reference, walking or biking across it is free; drivers must pay a small toll when arriving in the city. On the way here, you'll pass by the Marina Green and Crissy Field-- stop to take some photos if you need a break during the 25 minute journey from Toasty!

Expect to spend less than 1 hour here.

Baker Beach

Also located on the north-side of San Francisco is Baker Beach. On a sunny day, take a look at the stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, Marin Headlands, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Give yourself an opportunity to stretch your legs as you walk across soft sand and smell the salty ocean air. It should take approximately 15 minutes to bike here from the previous location.

Land's End Trail

Looking for a little adventure? This trail on the corner of San Francisco provides the perfect views of the coastline and the Golden Gate Bridge. Bring your family and friends to hike, walk, or run amongst wildflowers and grassy greens. Most of the trail consists of dirt and rocks, so make sure you’re dressed for the occasion. It should take you about 20 minutes to bike here from Baker Beach.

Expect to spend 1-3 hours here.

END TIME : 2:00 PM

After you've biked for about 40 minutes, you'll arrive back at Fisherman's Wharf! Return your bikes and try some warm clam chowder to warm your soul!

Have extra time on your hands?

Here are some of our honorable mentions:

Enjoy a Park

Spare some time for relaxation, and indulge in a nice break after your city excursions at one of San Francisco’s many parks. We strongly recommend Dolores Park or Golden Gate Park. The latter has gardens, picnic spaces, trails, sports courts, museums, playgrounds, and a Japanese tea garden. It’s always nice to see some greenery amongst a concrete city!

Oracle Park

Are you a sports fan? Baseball-lovers will love the home of the San Francisco Giants, Oracle Park! Grab a ticket to watch America’s favorite pastime, located in the South Beach neighborhood of the city.

Twin Peaks

If you have a car.... One of the most treasured parks in the city for its panoramic sights of San Francisco, Twin Peaks is a trail accessible by vehicles and by simply walking. The view from the top reveals a wide, stunning scene of the Bay; you’ll be able to see multiple landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the skyscrapers downtown. Trust us; it’s worth the trek.

Museums

Sometimes we need a break from our screens. Is there a better way to put down our phones, than to appreciate some fine art? Some popular spots include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the De Young Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Exploratorium, the Asian Art Museum, and the Palace of Fine Arts. Museums provide a sense of community, and give deep insight into the rich heritage and history of the wonderful city that over 800,000 people call home.

We hope you loved our (mostly) outdoor recommendations in Northern California’s Golden City. There’s so much to do, from visiting cool neighborhoods, hiking along the seascape, to catching some rays and Vitamin D. While you’re out gallivanting around the city, carve out some time in your itinerary, and make sure to take a pit stop at Toasty! Check us out on Instagram.
